Types of Audits in Switzerland

Depending on the size and structure of your company, Swiss law requires either an ordinary audit or a limited audit.

All audit firms in Switzerland must be authorized by the Federal Audit Oversight Authority (FAOA) in Bern.

1. Ordinary Audit

Mandatory for corporations that exceed at least two of the following thresholds for two consecutive years:

  • Balance sheet total of CHF 20 million
  • Turnover of CHF 40 million
  • 250+ full-time employees (annual average)

2. Limited Audit

Required for AGs (Aktiengesellschaft) and GmbHs (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung) that do not meet the thresholds for an ordinary audit. While less extensive, a Limited Audit Switzerland still ensures compliance and provides assurance to shareholders, creditors, and partners.

Opting Out

Very small companies with fewer than 10 employees can opt out of a limited audit, but only with unanimous shareholder approval.
